Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these treatments must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
